4 out of 5 stars EA Sports Active: Personal Trainer (Wii)   July 27, 2010

Great game/workout with a variety of excersises that can easily be done in the living room. The 30 day challenge with the personal trainer is pretty cool too - the intensity levels could be a bit harder.

4 out of 5 stars Feel Better   July 22, 2010
The Gadget Man (Stockport, England)
Was brought this for fathers day, guess they were trying to tell me something. For me it's ideal, it combines one of the things I like doing, playing with my gadgets, with one of the things I don't like doing but should do, exercise. I was also hoping it might help lose a bit of weight but so far this hasn't happened.

I have not quite finished that 30 day challenge yet and have not even tried the other options so can't really comment on the whole experience.

So why only 4 stars & not 5 stars? Well while the programme is good the equipment given with it is not so good. I especially have concerns about the strap that is used to hold the numchuck to your leg. Unless you strap it on really tight, causing lack of blood circulation to the leg, it slips down your leg forcing you to stop & re attach. Due to trying to attach it more permanently the strapping is now fraying & I am concerned that before long it will fall apart.

The other annoying thing is that if you don't hold the numchuck & controller in exactly the right position, even though you are doing the exercise correctly, your instructor will advise you that you are not.

I am waiting to get a wireless connection between the numchuck & controller as on certain exercises when reaching above your head you can end up nearly strangling yourself with the connecting wire.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite sure here...   July 21, 2010

Well, let's start by simply stating that I expected a lot more from this. What's most important, I believe this product could have easily been much better, because the Wii controls offer so much more potential, but it's simply not put to any use here. From the very start, the game promises to closely observe the way you do the exercises and that the trainer will keep an eye on you and guide you to do them properly. And I know from my yoga courses how extremely important this is, because exercising improperly actually brings more harm than fruit. This is where this game is a complete letdown.

After the first series of exercises the game had to offer I understood that you can pretty much move the way you want, it's all ok. In fact, you can completely fake the exercises - for example the jogging - the only thing the game tracks is the vertical movement of your nunchuk. And it's actually not even that - all you need to get moving is just to initiate the movement in the right direction and the game will assume you've raised your leg all the way up. In other words, you can easily just hold the Nunchuk in your hand (instead of having it on your leg) and move it up and down in small movements. Okay, you might say why would I want to fake my own exercises? Well, you are just not pushed to do it right and you don't feel rewarding about what you do. And it's maybe not a big deal for running, we all pretty much know how it's done and there's not that much to do wrong about it, but there are more serious exercises, where it truly matters how you position your body if you want to do it effectively - and the game actually tries to tell you how to perform the moves before you start - but simply doesn't evaluate you AT ALL. So after a while, you'll notice the lack of interaction this game offers and you'll feel like you can do all this with a book or DVD and the results are the same. Not even the in-game person representing yourself and your moves helps to compensate for everything stated above - it suffers from such delays (reacts about 1 second later after your move) that you'll actually stop looking at it after a while, because it's totally misleading.

On the other hand, there are some completely useless features, like for example tracking what you ate and what type of activities you've done yesterday. For my first day, I've entered that I ate lots of fastfood and didn't really have any physical activity at all, but it gave me a "gold medal" reward just for stating that I drank enough water. Again - might have been quite a useful feature for tracking your diet and daily physical activities, but instead it looks just like the entire game - EA wanted to produce something in this area, so they did, but never really developed it into something useful.

Considering this game utilizes all Wii controllers - the Wiimote, the Nunchuk as well as the Wii Fit Board - these should have been incorporated MUCH MUCH deeper with the game, to actually bring more sense to performing such activities on your console. As a result, after a couple of hours I simply don't feel tempted to go back to this game and maintain my daily exercises. EA Sports Active pretends to be the "serious" fitness title compared to Wii Fit, but I must admit Wii Fit does a significantly job in all areas - it's fun, it tracks your movements much better and it makes a much better use of the Wii controls. I cannot recommend buying this title as I truly don't see the added value here, it feels like an underdeveloped game that simply doesn't deliver where it should.

5 out of 5 stars does what it claims and more   July 17, 2010

used it really well in the initial months, great exercise software, but
1. The bands are not of high quality and would suggest you buy additional pairs of different strengths and
2. you have to be disciplined to stick to it. now need to get back to it ;)
